Ottawa Fitnest began with one person's search for belonging in a new country, and grew into a movement that creates the connections newcomers need.
Ottawa Fitnest began two months after I arrived in Canada, out of a personal need for connection, routine, and belonging. I quickly realized that while I was able to keep myself physically active, I was missing the social interaction and community that fitness had always given me back home.
One of the first things I tried to do after arriving was join a gym. I believed it would be a good way to meet people and feel part of society. But most community gyms were too expensive, especially for someone who had just landed. The affordable ones, like big box gyms, were full of people with headphones in—no eye contact, no conversation, no real chance to connect.
I wasn't just looking for a place to work out; I was looking for a way in. When I couldn't find that space, I decided to create it.
Ottawa Fitnest started outdoors, with five people who showed interest from TikTok. At the moment, it is growing into a full-fledged community initiative with weekly bootcamps, themed fitness events, and social hangouts designed to help newcomers meet, talk, and feel seen. Every session is beginner-friendly, low-cost (or free), and open to all ages and backgrounds.
"Creating spaces where newcomers don't just survive, but thrive."
Founder & Executive Director
Before moving to Canada, I was told that it will be depressing and lonely. I had seen people on the internet crying from isolation.
However, when I got here, I did not want that to be my story. I want that for other newcomers as well and I'm using fitness as a way to fight isolation and aid integration.
Today, Ottawa Fitnest is proof that community can be created anywhere, by anyone willing to take the first step.
